Wrapping the moonlight around her
She paces the cold hardwood floors,
Skirting past shadows of long ago longings
She's not sure are hers any more.
But the moonlight conspires with the shadows
In a way that she can't understand,
Flowing like honey all over her body
And into the palm of her hand.
[Chorus]
And the shadows were always forbidden
But now they beckon and loom.
And she needs to know what they've hidden.
'Cause it's midnight on the moon.
Midnight on the moon.
The hourglass sits on the mantle
And commands her attention tonight.
Is it half empty or is it half full;
Does it measure despair or delight?
And the grains of sand are like teardrops
In an ocean of fears she must face.
Frightened by memories of childhood vices
She feels her heart start to race.
[Chorus]
The moonlight it slips from her shoulders
Then slowly down over her breasts.
It snags on her nipples then, falling in ripples,
Around her ankles it rests.
And she stands in the shivering puddle,
Then steps out of the circle of light.
Unable to breathe, scarcely able to see,
She enters the shadows tonight.
[Chorus]
The shadows reach out and embrace her.
She feels both sinful and strong
Remembering all of the things she had wanted
Before she was taught they were wrong.
But the shadows are brighter than moonlight
And she can see clearly at last.
And as she turns round in amazement and wonder
She sees her future and past.
[Chorus]
The shadows are softer than ermine;
The shadows are harder than steel.
The shadows unlock all the chains that restrained her
That somehow she just couldn't feel.
Then she kneels on the floor in submission
To all she has always denied.
Wild and wise with both terror and joy
She knows she is finally alive.
[Chorus]
